Horn legislation recommends funding for projects at state universities, community colleges

LANSING, Mich. — The Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday approved a bill sponsored by state Sen. Ken Horn to advance a number of capital improvement projects at many of the Michigan’s public universities, community colleges, and other state institutions.

“As chair of the Senate Committee on Economic and Small Business Development, I have carefully examined our needs when it comes to keeping Michigan competitive. Each of these projects will help put Michigan’s higher education institutions in a position to thrive going forward,” said Horn, R-Frankenmuth. “An important part of attracting and retaining talent is enticing students and faculty to build new careers and lives here in this state. This investment moves us one step closer to accomplishing my goal to grow our state by 1 million people within 10 years, which I refer to as ‘Project 1MP.’”

Senate Bill 78 provides planning authorization for projects at 12 universities and 18 community colleges. The improvements range from renovations and additions to existing buildings to construction of new high-tech learning centers to help provide Michigan students with enhanced learning opportunities.

“These investments will reach every corner of the state and address our most critical workforce needs,” said Horn.  “We have engineering and aviation facilities at Eastern Michigan University, health sciences additions at Ferris State University, criminal justice and fire training facilities at Lake Superior State University, a renovated science complex at Oakland University, renovated science and computer laboratories at Saginaw Valley State University, new space for skilled trades programs at Kirtland and Oakland community colleges, and nursing and health technology spaces at Monroe and North Central community colleges — just to name a few.”

SB 78 also includes authorization for construction projects to ensure the state’s veterans get the care they deserve. The bill provides for improvements to the D.J. Jacobetti veterans home in Marquette and will establish much-needed new veterans homes in Detroit and lower Northern Michigan. In addition to these homes, the bill also provides funding for necessary upgrades to training facilities for Michigan State Troopers.

The bill now goes before the full Senate for consideration.
